Red-Hots & Applesauce

IMG_2666

One of the fun things I love about getting together with people when food is involved is trying out new dishes and finding new recipes to add to my collection.  This Thanksgiving one of the items we will serve with dinner will not fall into any of the “traditional dishes”.  I was introduced to this fun side-dish we call Red-Hot Applesauce the first Thanksgiving I spent at my In-laws.  Honestly, I was not interested at first, but I have since “warmed-up” 😉 to it!!  If you have kids and they like applesauce and hot candy, they will love this.  Also, have them help you make this and they will be included in the fun times of making Thanksgiving dinner.

Instructions
  1. Remove an ounce or two of applesauce from the jar, this allows you to be able to mix the candies in the jar. You can eat the plain applesauce or add it back to the jar once you have mixed in the candies. Now add the amount of candies that you want. Caution: it will get pretty spicy the more candies that you add.
  2. Now have your kids shake it up, or roll it back and forth on the table or they can use a long skinny spoon to stir it up. You will start to see the applesauce changing color and eventually the candies will dissolve.
  3. Once the candies have dissolved, taste to see if you like the flavor, if you want it spicier add more candies.
Recipe Notes

The hard coating of the candy will take a little while to dissolve, so shake a little and then let the applesauce sit for a while and then go back and do a little more shaking!  If you kept the small amount of applesauce you removed in the beginning, add this back into your candied sauce. You can prepare this the day before your meal, just make sure to refrigerate it and serve it chilled or make the day of and serve at room temperature. Any leftovers, refrigerate and eat within a week.

Enjoy
